Electricity is an everyday part of life and oftentimes taken for granted. But electricity must be treated with caution at all times. Practice these safety tips to remain safe:
- Do NOT go near or touch power lines. Assume every wire is “live”.
- Do NOT install a TV or radio antenna within falling distance of power lines.
- Do NOT use water on electrical fires. Evacuate the premises and call the fire department if you cannot extinguish it. If available, use a Class C fire extinguisher, which is recommended for electrical fires.
- Do NOT try to repair a break in an outdoor extension cord. Discard the cord and buy a new one.
- Do NOT use indoor lights outdoors. Use only bulbs, cords, wiring, outlets, etc. that are specifically designed for outdoor use.
- Do NOT attempt to use appliances, cords, etc. with wet hands and keep outdoor electrical devices away from swimming pools.
- Do NOT use metal strings or any metal when building a flying toy.
- Stay away from trees near overhead lines. The wind or your own weight could cause a limb to touch a live wire.
- Use outlet covers to protect children.
- Unplug small appliances, such as toasters, coffeemakers, etc., when not in use.
- When using power tools, ensure that electrical wiring is adequate for the job. Circuits should be grounded and tools should be three-pronged or double insulated.
- During severe weather, temporary low-voltage conditions can dim lights and remain low longer than a minute. Turn off or unplug all motorized appliances, TV’s, and fluorescent lamps.
- Repair or replace cords that are frayed or cracked.
- Use ground fault circuit interrupters in kitchen and bathroom outlets.
- Do NOT install light bulbs that are not the correct wattage for the fixture size.
- Do NOT force a plug into an outlet if it doesn’t fit.
- Do NOT remove the third prong of a three-pronged plug. The third prong is designed to safely ground electricity.
- Know how to safely reset your circuit breaker or replace a blown fuse.
- Call Harkey Electric Inc. for electrical installation, repair, or service.
